Sustainability Committee Gets a Jump Start in 2021

The Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI)'s sustainability efforts were elevated to full committee status by the VSI Board of Directors last fall. The newly formed Sustainability Committee, chaired by Eric Cotterman, Product/Installation Trainer for Cornerstone Brands, has crafted its 2021 work plan and an official committee charter to be presented to the Board next month.

The committee’s plan includes the following:

  • Ensure that sustainability information on vinyl siding, insulated siding, polypropylene siding and other polymeric siding is effectively positioned in the market.
  • Utilize Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and life cycle data. Grow understanding of recycling of polymeric cladding. Communicate and separate durable plastics from the issues surrounding single-use plastics.

As the committee moves further into 2021, it plans to launch more robust communications on recycling and begin its third round of life cycle inventory data – which eventually will be captured in the next version of the industry-wide EPDs.
