To ensure quality and performance, vinyl siding must meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM D3679, the Standard Specification for Rigid Poly (Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Siding. This includes standards for product durability, dimensional stability, and color retention.
As a service to the industry, the Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI)—now under the PEPA umbrella—sponsors a third-party certification program for multiple polymeric exterior claddings:
- Vinyl siding: Certified to ASTM D3679
- Polypropylene siding: Certified to ASTM D7254
- Insulated siding: Certified to ASTM D7793 (provides a minimum R-value of R-2.0)
Insulated siding is widely accepted in energy efficiency programs and is defined within the International Energy Conservation Code. You can also look for certification labels on product packaging to ensure compliance.
Siding Installation Guidelines
This manual outlines the basic principles for vinyl siding installation. It draws from ASTM D4756, the Standard Practice for Installation of Rigid PVC Siding and Soffit, and reflects updates based on evolving best practices and product innovations.
Installers should always consult:
- Local building codes
- Manufacturer-specific instructions
- PEPA guidelines for product category variations
Where discrepancies arise, manufacturer documentation should take precedence.
Application Notes
Vinyl siding and soffit installation methods are largely consistent between new construction and retrofit (re-siding) projects. Where distinctions exist, this manual includes additional guidance, including for historic restoration applications. Regardless of project type, careful structural prep is essential for long-term performance.
Polypropylene Siding
Polypropylene siding is a high-performance exterior cladding similar to vinyl siding. While it shares many characteristics, installation should follow the manufacturer’s specifications and adhere to all applicable codes.
